ESMORGA CAFEBRERIA

COFFE & BOOKS

A premise of this project was respect the bearing wall separating the building into two distinct areas, so relying on something that at first was a handicap, we tried to turn it into an element on which revolve around the project and stop seeing it as an obstruction, but as something sculptural sample of the old building.

This wall was intended to be as a distinguishing feature; it was conceived as an axis, the movement inside the Cafebrería will be around it. It is surrounded by the ladder in one side and the itineraries start in the same way, starting from one end side of the wall to the other.

As two well defined spaces were created, its use was solved in the same way: one of the areas will be served spaces including the areas for the exhibition of books, reading, watching and exposure and the other one will be the spaces served, used for the information spaces and movements, organizing thus uses circulations and open spaces.

Our area of served spaces, conceived for the enjoyment of the reader, creating large areas where searching for books and watching them will be generate in a natural and comfortable mode.

The floors have been divided by subject areas of reading, all have places for reading, gathering about this subjects and their analysis. All these areas have natural lighting, moreover, this light is increased with double heights, generating the spread of natural light throughout the building.

The area of spaces served is conceived as a hub of information and its center is located at the box in ground floor. The dividing wall that is in this area plays the main informative function, it becomes a vain ranging from the ground floor to the fourth; along this vain will move up one cladding made of tramex which allows to see the wall of granite; this tramex will support all the graphic signals on the center and will be visible from all floors.

A skylight was made in the mentioned vain to iluminate this low natural lighted area; a panoramic elevator is located in the North side to get more light access.

The chosen materials are brought by the concept of the final destiny of the building: a library, a home of books, sources of written expression, of freedom, and that's what was wanted to bring to all rooms, visual freedom. This concept is valued on the used materials, as the tramex that let you see beyond areas, divided areas with glass, all to get an easier overview of space.

Other materials used in the project, as steel and wood, despite their opacity, have been chosen in a light-coloured shade to increase lightning  and giving a sensation of vastness.

All these materials coexist with the existing stone walls, marking the old structure of the building as opposed to the new.
